It is a known fact that food is inevitable for all beings. Whether you cook, bake or just order a takeout regularly every person comes in contact with food on a day to day basis. So, why not turn this necessity into a passion.
Cooking and Baking are two of my most loved and adored passions. I have a few other passions too like gardening seasonally, sketching and painting, sewing, etc.
My tiny home kitchen is my happy place. I’m sure every one of us would have some passion or the other which keeps us captivated. Cooking and baking are two such hobbies which can become a passion and trust me when I say this- you won’t regret it even a tiny bit.
Kitchen therapy is a real thing. It helps you in many ways- emotionally, mentally, physically, etc. I’ve listed down 10 reasons why you need these two hobbies in your life-secrets about my passion.
COOKING AND BAKING: BRINGS BACK SWEET MEMORIES
The first dish I put together was a chocolate banana with nuts. I was five then and used to spends hours in the kitchen watching my mum and gran cook or bake. It used to be my favourite time during the day, besides watching cartoons on the television.
This isn’t a recipe post but I’d love to share this quick and easy to make kid-friendly dessert recipe. RECIPE: 1 peeled ripe banana, half-split lengthwise; a nice drizzle of your favourite chocolate syrup and some broken mixed nuts of your choice is all you need to make this tasty dessert. Now as an adult, I would love to make certain variations to this recipe. You could change the nuts for cocoa nibs, flax seeds, or anything else.
I learnt few cake baking tips and tricks from my aunt when I baked my first proper cake with her. It was a mango and cashew cake.
These two hobbies associate food with so many memories of people, places and times in our lives. This makes us feel connected and is all so comforting.
COOKING AND BAKING: MAKES YOU POPULAR AMONGST FRIENDS
Having a friend who loves to cook and bake is sure to get you fat, but in a good way. While on the other side, if you are the one who bakes birthday cakes and goodies from time to time, then you’re surely the popular one amongst your friends. Besides impressing your friends or work colleagues, baking and cooking also boosts your performance at work. It helps with problem solving, patience, ability to learn new skills, etc.
COOKING AND BAKING: MAKES YOU FEEL GOOD
Cooking and baking boost your self-esteem. It makes one more confident. When you decorate cupcakes and make them look pretty, you are generally praised and appreciated for your creation. This gives you a sense of achievement and makes you proud of your creation. Being proud of your creation boosts your self-esteem. Cooking and baking help us to nourish ourselves and others. And, if you do other tasks like listening to a podcast or music while cooking or baking it makes you feel even more ecstatic.
COOKING AND BAKING: APPEALS ALL FIVE SENSES
This is an important secret about my two passions. I bet no one will hate any of the following few perks about cooking and baking.
The smell of freshly baked cookies or freshly baked goods brought out of the oven just makes everyone drool. Watching food videos or reading about food on food blogs or even watching ASMR videos of cooking or baking just makes you feel better if you’re having a dull day. A melt-in-your-mouth luscious chocolate mousse elevates your taste buds and makes you go back for more. The sound of sizzling food in a pan or a sizzler at a restaurant makes you turn around and watch in amazement as the food in it gets an extra charred layer, the good kind. The touch of the top of a crème brûlée to check if the sugar coating is caramelised enough, or the touch of the dough of bread to check if its proofed well just makes us feel food in a different way.
So, to conclude Cooking and Baking increases feel good endorphins and in turn reawakens happy memories
COOKING AND BAKING: GOOD FOR PEOPLE WITH DEPRESSION
Cooking and baking can help with mental wellbeing. Baking a cake can be a very therapeutic activity and is a good form of therapy for anyone who suffers from depression. It helps to divert your mind and in turn calm you down.
Having these two as a hobby can help you beat the blues as cooking and baking creates comforting and nurturing feelings. They ease the negative thinking process of the human mind. They give you a zen experience which puts you in a different comforting zone.
COOKING AND BAKING: IS COMFORTING
Cooking and baking are very comforting processes. Baking makes me feel connected to a time when I was in the comfort of being at home. I used to enjoy watching cooking shows, writing down the recipes and eventually experimenting with those recipes in the kitchen. There were some fails but quite a few memorable ones too.
I find comfort in reading cookbooks, baking blogs, watching food network and food videos on YouTube.
In Goa, we have a tradition of bringing Christmas sweets and food to someone when a loved one has passed. That is truly comforting for them and for the ones preparing the sweets.
COOKING AND BAKING: HELPS IN BUILDING ONES FOCUS
Measuring all your ingredients properly before baking a cake is mandatory. All your weights, litres have to be measured to perfection. A recipe should be followed step by step and with utmost concentration.
It is important to know how long it’ll take for onions to caramelise just enough so that they don’t burn. You have to be focused. You can’t lose track of time. These two hobbies are like exercises which help in building ones focus. It helps you switch off from your busy life and focus on carefully creating any baked goods or recipes.
COOKING AND BAKING: GIVES A SENSE OF PRODUCTIVITY
It is good for a person’s personal growth if they get a sense of productivity when they finish any given task at hand. This holds true when you cook or bake something.
Cooking and baking boosts your confidence and provides you with a sense of achievement. And, being proud of your creation in turn boosts your self-esteem.
Also, if you normally like holding supper clubs or even if someone comments on your food at a potluck, this boosts your self-esteem even more making you proud of your creations. This gives you a sense of self-worth.
COOKING AND BAKING: HELPS YOU SLEEP WELL
Cooking and baking help in reducing stress. It calms you down and give you a sense of productivity. It gives you a sense of wellbeing. This in turn helps you sleep better. It helps you to switch off from the busy mundane world. Baking and cooking is a form of mindfulness. These two hobbies increase happiness, reduce stress and helps you to focus on your well-being.
COOKING AND BAKING: BRINGS OUT ONES CREATIVITY
This is definitely a yay! The art of cooking and baking lets you experiment with new recipes from time to time. It lets you create your own recipes and in turn showcase the creative side in you. You can bake pretty looking cakes and serve elegant looking dishes. You can go wild and be creative on a plate. It is a great creative outlet and a way of expressing yourself on the plate.
